During the 2013 tax filing season the Internal Revenue Service will no longer prepare tax returns in the Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) effective January 1, 2014 due to budget cuts, IRS National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson said. The TACs will assist taxpayers with tax return preparation for 2012 and prior years until December 31, 2013.
Without assistance from the IRS, the elderly, disabled and low-income taxpayers who rely on the free help will be forced to spend money on tax preparation. Olson at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the California Tax Bar & the California Tax Policy Conference in San Jose on Saturday, November 9, 2013 urged tax practitioners at a conference to volunteer through local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance programs run by the IRS and other low-income taxpayer clinics.
